Established in 2014 in Indonesia, LAISON’s collections are a play on the intricate complexities of modern women, structured yet gentle, detailed yet effortless, subtle but distinct. select by ROOMOOMO interviewed the lady behind LAISON, Aurelia Santoso, on the latest collection and the acceptance to the New York Fashion Week this year.
How did LAISON got accepted to NYFW? What is NYFW like?
“We were invited and sponsored to do NYFW, and it was really exciting and a really good experience for us to be able to showcase on an international platform. It is quite eye opening and we learn so much on how the business is conducted on such a global platform. How other brands are doing their business, shows and marketing at such different scale. You can really feel the excitement and enthusiasm in New York during the fashion week.”
What is the new collection about?
We peered into issues that raised our concern as war and violence continuously flood the news,
“It is inevitable for LAISON to raise the concern of war and violence and take it as the motive of the collection”
Taking military elements, LAISON dismantles the components and adjust it into a modern and humble rendition. Refusing the expected, LAISON takes the camo pattern and dispenses them into embroideries and digital prints. Playing with colors and scale, the camo shapes are purposely taken out of context without losing its essence.
“Pieces are feminine and soft, yet structured and voluminous.”
How do you describe the differences between this new collection and the previous ones?
I think as LAISON grew and we have gained more and more resources, we are able to do more exciting things with the pieces. We are able to use more treatments onto our pieces, techniques such as embroidery and more elaborate readings are now possible to be incorporated into our RTW pieces. Which is really exciting. As we want LAISON to compete on a global scale, it is really important to constantly re-invent ourselves, and always constantly be better and improve every season.
What is LAISON’s future aim in the fashion journey?
We are hoping to bring LAISON overseas and to have more international exposure. As we grow as a company and a brand, we are hoping that we can reach a wider and bigger market. It is important to be able to relate and communicate better to have a stronger impact.
“LAISON is not just another clothing brand, we want people to be able to see that there are so many aspects and depth to a LAISON woman.”
There are so many aspects of the business and the brand that we need to improve, and we really do realize that we still have a long way to go, and there are so many things that we need to learn. But we believe with constant push and as long as we continue pushing to the right direction that we will pull through.
